Lessons and Recitals

I find the most satisfaction helping singers open their voices to their true potential. Teaching is what I choose to do full-time, and this is where I put all of my attention. I absolutely love my craft, and I find joy in learning about my students and having the ability to help them on many different levels.

If you study voice with me you may find that, in addition to the knowledge required to help you to learn about music and the mechanics of singing, I also have awareness about what is happening in your body when I listen to you and watch you sing. I am often told that I have an intuitive sense that has helped my students to break through whatever was holding their voices back on a physical level, and frequently also on an emotional, thought-based level. Many people sing using only a fraction of what their voice really is, and it is my work to help people break through barriers and discover the confidence and freedom that can be found from tapping into the fullness of that which is their true voice.

Singing and speaking with an un-manipulated, free voice can also help diminish chronic vocal fatigue and pain associated with singing and speaking. Most often throat pain and loss of voice are the results of what a person is habitually doing (rather than NOT doing) when singing or speaking. If you are one who is seeking help in this area, we will work together to discover what is happening in your mind and body that is causing you discomfort, vocal hoarseness or the uttering of undesirable sounds. The discovery of your true voice (as well as your confidence, and often, your self) will continue to evolve and grow as you work with me and as you practice using the vocalization CDs between sessions.

The Voice Lesson Process

When you come to your first voice lesson, I will teach you my unique series of vocal exercises that will ease you into singing and train your body to sing with proper alignment, natural breathing and relaxed (but supported) production. The exercises consist of nonsense words such as "zee-nah-ee" and "hung-ah" and are designed to train the voice and get you accustomed to singing with correct usage of the muscles of your throat and body. You will be given a free practice CD to take home with you to use as a guide when you practice technique between sessions. Once the exercises (that double as a vocal warm-up) are completed, the remainder of the lesson you will sing the song of your choice utilizing the techniques practiced in the exercises. If you do not know what sort of songs to choose, I can help you and also provide piano/vocal sheet music (copies) as needed. We will use either live piano accompaniment, karaoke arrangements and/or other pre-recorded material as accompaniment when you are singing songs or arias. Normally we will stay on one song or aria for several weeks, working only with piano accompaniment at first until you are completely comfortable with the material. I will provide you with instruction regarding the most efficient way practice between sessions with the Vocalization CD. I will always guide your progress and help you in every way I can while you are learning. Once you get to know me, you may find that I am an easy going and friendly person, but I will always urge you to work hard on whatever your goals may be.

Recital Opportunities

Recitals are usually held bi-annually, one in November and one in March. Students, parents and friends gather in a nearby church for a student recital. Students of all ages and levels are encouraged to perform a song that they been working on in their lessons. Recitals are a wonderful opportunity for students to practice performance skills in front of a friendly and supportive audience. Recitals also give students and parents of students a chance to meet and connect with other students and their families. There is no extra fee to participate, and we usually have a little potluck type reception in between the first and second half of the program. Lots of fun!
